Filter care

Pool filter cleaning in Cape Coral, FL

A dirty filter makes the pump work harder and the water look dull. We clean cartridge, DE and sand filters properly.

What do you need?

What does pool filter cleaning involve?

Your filter catches the fine dirt, pollen and algae the skimmer and brushes miss. Over time it clogs, and the pump has to push harder to move water through it. Water flow drops, the pool looks dull and the equipment wears faster.

Pool filter cleaning in Cape Coral means opening the filter, cleaning or backwashing the media, checking the parts inside and closing it back up. We read the pressure gauge before and after, so you can see the difference.

Along the way we look for cracked laterals, torn cartridges, worn O-rings and leaking valves. Any of these can make a filter look clean while it still lets dirt through. If we find a part that needs replacing, we tell you and quote it in writing before doing anything.

Cartridge, DE or sand: how is each filter cleaned?

Each type works differently, so each needs its own method.

Cartridge filters

The cartridge is lifted out and hosed down between the pleats. A heavy build-up of oil, scale or algae may need a soak in a cleaning solution. A cartridge that is torn, flattened or past its working life is replaced rather than cleaned.

DE filters

Diatomaceous earth coats grids inside the tank. These filters are backwashed, opened and the grids cleaned, then recharged with fresh DE. The used powder has to be disposed of properly, not rinsed into the street.

Sand filters

Sand filters are backwashed to flush the dirt out. Over time the sand clumps and stops filtering well, and it may need to be replaced. We check the condition of the sand and the multiport valve.

How often should a Cape Coral pool filter be cleaned?

There is no single schedule. A widely used rule is to clean the filter when the pressure gauge reads about 8 to 10 psi above the clean starting pressure for your system. Look at your gauge right after a cleaning, and note the number.

In Cape Coral, filters often work harder than in cooler climates. Summer algae, pollen, fine dust, storm debris and the mess from palms and trees all add load. After a strong storm, a green clean-up or a long hot spell, a filter may need attention sooner than you expect.

Hard water also leaves mineral scale on cartridges and grids, which cuts how much dirt they can hold. If water seems dull even after cleaning, scale may be the cause. We can check the filter and tell you whether it is time for a deeper clean or a replacement.

We quote in writing before work starts. The price depends on a few things:

  • Filter type. A cartridge rinse is usually quicker than a DE strip-down.
  • Filter size. A big tank or multiple cartridges take longer.
  • Condition. Scale, algae or oil need extra time and cleaning solution.
  • Parts. Replacement cartridges, grids, sand or O-rings are extra.
  • Access. A tight equipment pad adds time.

A normal cleaning is often done in one visit and takes a modest amount of time. A filter with heavy scale or damage takes longer. Where wastewater has to go matters too. In many Florida cities, filter backwash should not be sent to storm drains or canals, so ask how any contractor handles disposal.

What are the signs that your filter needs attention?

Pay attention if you notice any of these:

  • The pressure gauge is well above its normal reading
  • Return jets are weaker than before
  • Water is dull or cloudy even though chemicals test fine
  • You are cleaning the filter more often than before
  • Dirt or sand is blowing back into the pool
  • Water is leaking around the filter lid or valve

A high gauge reading can also point to a pump problem, so see our page on pool pump repair if cleaning does not help. For regular care that keeps the filter from clogging in the first place, look at weekly pool service, or start from the home page.

Questions about pool service in Cape Coral

How do I know if my pool filter is dirty?

Check the pressure gauge. If it has risen about 8 to 10 psi above the reading you had right after the last cleaning, the filter is due. You may also notice weaker flow from the return jets and duller water. If you do not know your clean starting number, we can note it for you when we finish a cleaning.

Can I clean my own pool filter?

Many owners rinse their own cartridge, and that is fine if you are comfortable doing it. A deeper clean, DE recharge, sand replacement or any repair is worth leaving to someone who does it regularly. Mistakes can crack parts, let dirt through or send DE into the pool. Ask us if you are unsure, and we will explain what to do.

What is the difference between backwashing and cleaning?

Backwashing reverses the water flow to flush trapped dirt out of a sand or DE filter. Cleaning means opening the filter and cleaning the media by hand or with a solution. Backwashing is a regular task between deeper cleans. It does not remove oil, scale or heavy buildup, which is why a filter can still perform poorly after backwashing.

Do I need to replace my filter cartridge?

Cartridges wear out. If the pleats are flattened, torn or crumbling, or if the cartridge still performs badly after a full clean, it is probably time. The life depends on how much you use the pool, your water and how often it is cleaned. We check the condition when we clean it and tell you before replacing anything.

Where does the filter wastewater go?

It should go where local rules allow. In many Florida areas, backwash and DE should not go into storm drains or canals, because they carry sediment and chemicals. Rules differ by city and county, so check with the city if you are unsure, and ask any contractor how they dispose of it.
