Step 1 of 3

What do you need?

What is a salt pool, and how does it work?

A salt pool is still a chlorine pool. The difference is where the chlorine comes from. Instead of adding chlorine by hand, a salt chlorine generator turns a small amount of salt in the water into chlorine. The system is installed in the plumbing near the pump and filter.

The water holds much less salt than the sea. A typical level is around 3,000 parts per million, so most swimmers find it softer and less harsh than a pool with heavy chemical chlorine. You still need to test the water for pH, alkalinity and stabilizer. The generator does not replace testing.

Salt pool conversion in Cape Coral means fitting the generator and cell, adding the right amount of salt, setting the output and making sure the rest of the pool is balanced before you start.

Is a salt pool right for a Cape Coral home?

For many owners it is a good fit, and it is common in southwest Florida. Salt systems give a steady supply of chlorine, which helps in the hot months when a pool burns through it fast. Many owners like not handling chlorine tablets or jugs.

There are trade-offs. The equipment costs more at the start. The cell wears out and must be replaced eventually. Salt water can be hard on some materials, including certain natural stones, pavers, metal fittings and ladders. Check with your pool builder or the manufacturer if you have a stone deck or coping.

Things to ask before you convert

  • What is my pool surface and deck made of?
  • Is my pump, filter and heater compatible with salt?
  • What size generator suits the pool and any spa?
  • Will the system work with my current automation?

What does salt cell and chlorine generator service include?

A salt cell is not a fit-and-forget part. Heat, sun and Florida's often hard water leave white mineral scale on the plates, and that cuts how much chlorine the cell can make. Regular checks keep it working.

A service visit typically covers:

  • Testing the salt level and the balance of the water
  • Inspecting the cell for scale and damage
  • Cleaning the cell, usually with a mild acid solution
  • Checking the flow switch and the control board for faults
  • Reading any error codes and explaining them
  • Adjusting the output to suit the season

If the cell is worn out, we tell you and give a written quote for a replacement.

We quote in writing before any work begins. The cost of a conversion or repair depends on:

  • Generator size. A bigger pool, or a pool with a spa, needs a larger unit.
  • Brand and features. Some units have extra controls and app connections.
  • Plumbing and electrical. Where the unit goes, how far the wiring runs and whether a new power supply is needed.
  • Automation. Linking the system to existing controls adds work.
  • Replacement cells. A new cell can be a large part of a service bill.
  • Pool condition. Water that is badly out of balance needs fixing first.

Ask any company whether salt is included with the generator, and what warranty the manufacturer offers on the unit.

How long does it take, and when should you call?

Fitting a generator is often a same-visit job when the plumbing and power are straightforward. Filling in the salt, balancing the water and checking the output may take another day or two before the pool settles. A cell service is much shorter.

Call if your system shows a low-salt or no-flow warning, if chlorine readings keep falling, if the cell is covered in white crust or if the control box shows an error. Call before you convert if you are not sure whether your deck, heater or equipment can handle salt.

A heater on a salt pool can be affected by the water chemistry, so see our page on pool heater repair if that applies. For regular care of a salt pool, look at weekly pool service, or return to the home page.

What do you need?

Questions about pool service in Cape Coral

Is a salt pool chlorine-free?

No. A salt system makes chlorine from the salt in the water, so the pool is still sanitized with chlorine. What changes is how it is made and delivered. Many people find the water feels softer and has less chlorine smell, but the pool still needs regular testing and balancing, plus cell care.

Is a salt pool cheaper to run?

It can be, but not always. You spend less on chlorine, but the equipment costs more up front, the cell needs replacing eventually, and salt, acid and other chemicals are still part of upkeep. Whether it saves money depends on your pool, your chemical use and how long you keep the system.

Can salt damage my pool deck or equipment?

It can affect some materials. Natural stone, certain pavers, metal fittings, ladders and rails can corrode or wear faster around salt water. Splash-out and drainage matter too. Check with your pool builder or the equipment maker before converting if you have stone or older metal parts, and ask us if you want a second opinion.

How often does a salt cell need cleaning?

It depends on your water and how hard the cell works. Hard water and warm temperatures lead to faster scale. Many owners have it checked a few times a year, and more often if chlorine output drops. We can inspect it and tell you whether it needs cleaning or replacing.

Can you convert my existing chlorine pool to salt?

In most cases yes, but the pool needs a look first. We check the plumbing, power supply, pool surface, deck and equipment, then recommend a unit and give a written quote. If something is not suited to salt, we say so rather than sell you a system that will cause problems.
